Dhoom Machaale IV

KOA Refugee Educational Assistance Program

The proceeds from Dhoom Machaale IV went to support Kashmiri Overseas Association (KOA), an organized based in Jammu India.  Their goal is to help needy Kashmiri students, specifically those who had been devastated by the ethnic cleansing of 1989, pursue higher education.  That year, many Kashmiri families were forced to flee their homes and move to Jammu, where many have been living in refugee camps ever since.  KOA has worked closely with leaders from Kashmiri Pandit Sabha in Jammu, to find students who demonstrate the greatest need.  The hope is that by providing higher education for children of the less fortunate, the students will be able to help lift their families out of the squalid conditions that have trapped them as refugees for all these years.

In order to receive aid, the applicant must be a refugee from Kashmir Valley and has to provide proof of admission, preferably in a professional field, in a recognized college level educational institution. Top priority is given to the students from the refugee camps.  The students are selected for financial assistance on merit-cum-poverty basis.  At present, it takes $300 to sponsor a student for one year.  The proceeds from Dhoom Machaale IV were able to support 10 deserving students for this year.  Many have been accepted to the top schools in India. To date, a total of 1629 students have graduated through this college level program.  All of us from IAC-Disha hope to continue to support these deserving students.
